Barry James is a visionary systems thinker, innovator, and technologist whose work over four decades has consistently shaped the leading edge of emerging technologies and their intersection with civil society. A scientist and psychologist by training, Barry began his professional journey in 1979 as a systems analyst, after nearly a decade of writing software. Since then, he has become a globally respected voice in fintech, blockchain, humane economics, neurodiversity, and artificial intelligence. In 2012, he conceived and advocated for the creation of the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Innovation Unit—a model now emulated in over 50 countries. His blend of technical acumen and ethical grounding has guided policy, inspired entrepreneurs, and driven systemic innovation in sectors ranging from the NHS to global finance. Barry is widely celebrated for his rare ability to distill complex systems into lucid, poetic metaphors that make transformative ideas accessible, with accolades from peers such as Prof. Crossland of Durham Energy Institute and Dr. Julie Gregory. He has helped found pioneering initiatives like CityAM’s CryptoInsider and The CrowdDataCentre, and speaks internationally on topics including innovation, humane technology, neurodiversity, and the future of energy. Barry continues to lead independent thought at the frontier of social-impact technology through his pro-bono work with Westminster Forums, HumaneX, and Humane.Energy, illuminating paths toward a more just and regenerative world.
